Lingam or Linga (Sanskrit: Gender as in purusha-linga�: Phallus) is used as a symbol for the worship of the Hindu God Shiva (Siva). The use of this symbol as an object of worship is a timeless tradition in India; mainstream scholars connect the origin of the lingam / linga to the early Indus Valley civilization. The Shivalingam is also a representation of the infinite Cosmic Column of fire, whose origins, Vishnu and Bhrama were unable to trace.
